Legacy of Goldrush—California’s Water Crisis

Building a dam spillway—theoretically for excess water release in storms—can have its engineering headaches, especially when material chosen for landfill is a legacy of California’s 1849 Goldrush.

Silt built up during 19thC. gold-panning days was used in early 1960s, alongside local sandstone, to construct a backup system for California’s second-largest [electricity-generating] dam at Oroville, despite knowledge that sand and silt from river erosion takes years to settle. And preferably a series of dry years, without rain storms. When it rains, the emergency—earth sluice—is expected to handle any excess.

This year at Oroville both main spillway and emergency failed.

Dammed if we Do and Damned if we Don’t

Department of Water Resources has charge of maintaining an adequate water system for agriculture in the adjacent Central Valley, but it is also responsible for maintaining water aqueducts and two pipelines to supply 3.8million households in Southern California.

In addition to the bonus of the Dam’s production of hydro-electric power for the State.

But background to this important water resource reveals shaky foundations.

Despite a crucial rainstorm flood over Christmas 1964, the incomplete dam was launched by Gov.Ronald Reagan in May 1968, during a week-long festival in Oroville attended by 50,000 visitors.

Ten years later, a massive series of earthquakes hit Oroville in August 1975.

Lori Dengler, Professor Emeritus of Geology at HSU, then a graduate student at UC Berkeley, was obsessed with the seismic ‘swarm’ that shook the dam and its surrounding “surface faulting”—a cluster of fault lines—similar to Petrolia. To her, earthquake reaction came after water levels were dramatically changed.

During the winter of 1974-1975, the lake was drawn down to its lowest level since inauguration, to repair the intakes to the power plant. It was then rapidly refilled and followed by the earthquake sequence of 1975.

August 1, 1975 a Mag.5.8 earthquake hit Oroville. Quakes of this size can occur anywhere in the state, so its size was no surprise. This had been a seismically quiet area, however, and those of us working in the lab noticed when seven earthquakes in the Magnitude-3 range occurred in a tight cluster near the lake. On August 1st, the seismicity ramped up—a Mag.4.7, a Mag.5.8 and 35 additional tremors in the Magnitude-3 range. Vigorous aftershocks continued with over 200 earthquakes in the magnitude-3 range recorded over the next 18 months. Then things quieted down and no earthquakes of Magnitude-3 or larger have been recorded near Oroville since 1992.

It’s not unusual for an earthquake sequence to pop up out of the blue, but the difference in Oroville was two factors linking the earthquakes to the filling of the reservoir. The first was the proximity to the lake, the location of surface faulting and the tightly clustered epicenter locations. The second factor was that the earthquakes followed an unprecedented seasonal fluctuation in lake levels.

Time Travel to the Tertiary

Taking a time machine back to 1975 and 1968, Oroville might never have been built

Taking a time machine back to 1975 and 1968, Oroville might never have been built

The Foothills Fault System—which includes faults like Cleveland Hills, Spenceville, Deadman, Maidu, Prairie Creek, Swain Ravine and Willows—skirts east of Folsom Lake and runs through Auburn, Placerville, El Dorado Hills and Shingle Springs. The system runs from Mariposa to Chico. The 1975 Magnitude 6.1Richter Oroville earthquake was caused by movement along the Cleveland Hills fault.

For more than a century, the Foothills were considered seismically inactive. That changed with the 1975 Oroville earthquake. The temblor did not cause much damage outside the sparsely-populated Oroville area, but it did have a major impact.

The scientific community had to reassess the large Sierra Foothills area as seismically active, according to the California Geological Survey.

“The Auburn Dam was being built at the time and for design purposes we were asked to estimate how large an earthquake the system could generate. We estimated a Magnitude-6.5 Richter, capable of displacing the dam’s foundation by about three-quarters of a foot. That sent the dam back to the drawing board. The cost multiplied over time, and the dam was never built.”
Michael Reichle, Asst. Director Dept. of Conservation
California Geological Survey

Oil and Gas Wells in Sunken Bedrock Add Instability

Data from a number of (USGS) sources indicate that the Willows fault is far more extensive and complex than previously thought and that Tertiary deposits in the Foothills are in motion. The first clue that the Willows fault branched into a multistrand fault system was provided by an analysis of seismicity of the northern valley and Sierra foothills after the Oroville earthquake. USGS (in 1978) located a number of small-magnitude earthquakes along a zone that originated near the Marathon “Capital Company No. 1” well in the Willows-Beehive Bend gas field and extended north, rather than following the northwest trend of the Willows fault. A slew of seismic events suggested that a north-trending fault splayed off from the main stem of the Willows fault and passed west of the Corning domes.

On the east side of the valley, Upper Cretaceous sandstone and shale rest uncomfortably on metamorphic and plutonic rocks of the Sierra Nevada.

These bed companions are not made any more comfortable by the instability of the great seismic rift which stretches from Mariposa (Yosemite) in the south to Chico and Cottonwood, just S of Redding, in the north. The bedrock first went through onset of marine sedimentation (W to E) in the late Mesozoic era, and through intermittent periods of uplift and subduction the sand and shale—along with their mountain bedfellows—tilted to south and west. In late Cretaceous the reverse occurred and the sand/shale deposits slid westwards—’marine regression’ (E to W).

During these upheaval and subsidence cycles, four submarine canyons developed—cut and then filled, rifting and then flooded with sediment. Where they meet, near Sutter Butte cinder cone, above, movement both east and west continues.

Riverbank Collapse on Dam Shutdown Leaves Salmon Floundering

Riverbank collapse after dam spillway shut off March 3, 2017 leaving salmon hatcheries & farmers floundering

In the Corning gas fields, analysis of well records by the Sacramento Petroleum Association (1962) showed an anticlinal fold in the area of the Corning domes, with about 121m of maximum closure on the base of the Tehama Formation in the north dome and a steeply dipping southeast-trending fault located at the north end of south Corning dome, but it did not identify a fault west of them.
California Geological Survey

With a new gap in the main spillway now stretching like a fifteen-lane freeway across the cement foundation, immediate closure of Oroville Dam was announced this week. Such a drastic move is in part attributed to safety of those displaced valley residents who have since been allowed to return to their homes and orchards.

Oakdale Heights school children release Chinook hatchlings into Feather River last fall

Salmon young and riverine residents are now without a river bed, as most of the banks have collapsed. Almond, peach orchards and fruit farms, dependent on a seasonal flow of water, were unprepared for such extreme measures, their irrigation systems now high and dry. Salmon fingerlings and immature Chinook die in stranded pools, life-expectancy zero.

Children from Oakdale Heights school, above left, releasing babies last fall into the river, expected their hatchlings to have at least a one-percent chance of survival, on their return from the ocean, are now dismayed by the zero percent outcome for the salmon after dam failure.

Governor Jerry Brown has pledged financial help for storm-affected communities, but the state of California has already unmet infrastructure costs of $187 billion, not including roads. While $2.7 billion has been approved [Prop.1, 2014] for new water storage, that doesn’t cover old dams.

Remembering the warning of seismologists Reichle and Dengler, above, against any sudden changes in water body movement—which can trigger volcanic fault movement—we await the outcome of the shutdown decision with anxiety. It’s not only the salmon spelt, rescued manually from puddles, it’s the water supply for most of the Great Valley.

At times of flood and deluge like these, the slow approach to dam containment—like that of the Klamath River tribal community, with four Atlas Copco dams to maintain until they are dismantled and removed—seems preferable to acting on impulse.

Where Mother Nature rules, we mortals are still fallible.

Our Earth Climate—Going with the Flow or Shifting the Goalposts

YEAR 2015 BEAT HISTORICAL RECORDS

2015 hottest & most active on record. Can we take it? Or will we break it?

2015 hottest & most active on record. Can we take it? Or will we break it?

Last December’s climate conference in Paris set a goal—agreed on by the Earth’s most powerful mid-East, West and Southern nations—to hold our combined increase in the global average temperature to two degrees Centigrade (2ºC) /Celsius, or 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit—above pre-industrial levels.

Now February 2016 has already reached world temperature limit, see below.

Climate-speak—no time for fairytale flowery language: do or die

If we continue at the rate we’ve been going, NASA’s climatology computer model shows dramatic swings happening in world temperature, volcanic activity, and rainfall—not in twenty years, but in two.

As the predicted temperatures rise, the same group of scientists admit that ‘model uncertainty’ grows: that means it becomes increasingly more likely that we will experience “unforeseen, often disastrous” events. Hurricane Katrina? Just a fond memory.

It’s doubtful we’ll hold the line at two degrees Centigrade, but we need to give it our best shot. With anything that exceeds that target, we’re talking about enormous changes in global precipitation and temperature patterns, huge impacts on water and food security, and significant sea level rise

‘I believe future generations will look back on 2015 as an important but not decisive year in the struggle to align politics and policy, with science. This is an incredibly hard thing to do. On the science side, there has been a steady accumulation of evidence over 15 years, that climate change is real’

Piers is convinced that if we continue unabated on this trajectory—i.e. make promises and do nothing—we could lead ourselves into a very uncomfortable, even dangerous, place.

Climate Ceiling Reached
The hottest on record is no joke in NASA and NOAA kingdoms. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration at Goddard and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration take their newest computer science statistics seriously.

In perfect (space) timing, January 17th was launch date for Jason-3, the Space people’s answer to their weather-prediction prayers.

For this beauty*, NASA and NOAA cooperated with the French space agency to get their baby strategically placed in orbit—understandably—to monitor North American shores—impacting both Atlantic and Pacific coasts. Their data will also serve wider world systems on other shores.

Jason-3 adds to a twenty-three-year satellite monitoring of global sea surface maximum height levels—a measurement with scientific, commercial and practical applications related to climate change.
It is essentially a record of world currents and weather. Jason-3 data will be used for monitoring global sea level rise, researching human impacts on oceans, aiding prediction of hurricane intensity, and has marine navigation capability.

Its initial 2016 mission—is planned to last a minimum of three years.

*Sadly the Falcon-9 rocket, planned after re-entry to be recycled in the best Space Shuttle tradition, failed to land on its target—an unmanned platform in the Pacific—exploded and destroyed the platform. Oh well, another $1million down the tubes. Back to the drawing board for Vandenberg air base buffs.

What can we back on Earth do?

Instead of multiple repetitive wars among ourselves, it’s been suggested we combine our intelligence for a war on emissions.

Early 2016 has been a hard year for Earth-First proponents, particularly in the Pacific NorthWest where the lungs of the planet—the Giant Redwoods, Bristlecone Pine and Douglas Fir—reside. This ‘carbon storage unit’ of age-old trees has been functioning well until quite recently. Then some of the lumber companies—instead of respecting the tradition of replant, restore, regenerate—succumbed to the old dollar bribe:
success in any industry, it seems, is measured by the bottom line of the balance sheet.

Local so-called environmentally-friendly forestry interests—some calling themselves ‘Resource’ companies—have, over a generation, acquired tens of thousands of acres of ancient trees illegally from original California settlers, and are systematically felling them in the name of ‘harvest’.

CLEAR-FELLING OUR WAY TO OBLIVION

The Caledonian Forest in Scotland is a prime example of successive raiders, decimating or razing to the ground every living thing—in the name of war—or progress. Sadly, while we may have learned how, we seem unable to implement our new knowledge: that wildlife—especially tree forms—maintain a balance which we humans have difficulty grasping: that our life on Earth would be a devastation—a vast wilderness—if we were to continue, to run amok, clear-felling our way to oblivion.

It happened to the precursor of the Sahara Desert. Now Namibia. And it’s occurring all over Brazil. More shocking, it’s happening in our own backyard—in the midst of the most-politically-correct university community in North America. And we seem blind to the signs, the gradual erosion of what was once a flourishing planetary breathing system—healthy ancient trees.

Our attitude to forests—their vibrancy, and consequently our own continuing existence—seems faulty.

In Europe during both world wars, all participating countries felled trees to build with, and to burn—as part of the ‘war effort’.

France decimated the Alsace region and felled throughout the Loire valley, regardless of ‘aspect’—the term used in gardens of great houses, when meshing planting with a pleasant view. In Germany—while many southern forests were left untouched—e.g. Schwarzwald, Poland, Eastern bloc, northern trees suffered in an endless drive for more war fuel.

Scotland suffered heavily. Deterred from obliterating millennium-old giant yews in their own home counties, the English pounced on (what was left of) the Caledonian Forest in Aberdeenshire, Kincardine and Forfar, and finished off what raiders had begun centuries before.

Most ‘recently’, Robert the Bruce, self-crowned king of Scots, began his march a.k.a. tree-burning at the Battle of Barra, 1308, in central Aberdeenshire and burned his army’s route thirty miles to the North Coast. The Caledonian forest—pine in particular—never recovered.

The Caledonian Forest had only just revived after Roman burning!

North Britain Conquest and Retreat

Regenerating the Caledonian Forest—author with Tacitus’ Mons Graupius in background

In November of AD83, as winter began its icy grip, Roman general Agricola pushed for one more battle in North Britain, before retiring to the comfort of Rome. It is said he took the Caledonians by surprise, but it is more likely Roman foot soldiers had more leverage on steep mountain terrain than the antiquated wooden chariots of the Picts. Rallied by the piercing cry of their battle-horn, the fearsome gold boar-headed carnyx, thirty thousand Caledonians gathered on the slopes of Bennachie. Ten thousand bodies were left dead after the battle.

Solitudinem faciunt Pacem appellant
They create a Wilderness and call it Peace—Calgacus exhorting his Caledonian tribes to battle at Mons Graupius

Tacitus could not possibly have known what Calgacus said to his troops before the battle of Mons Graupius—GRAMPIAN mountain range in Aberdeenshire—even the Chieftain’s name fails to appear in any Kinglist. Yet this one particular phrase from his speech has a genuine feel about it, as if Tacitus had heard it himself from the lips of captured Pictish warriors, and was moved to write it down. Publius Cornelius Tacitus’s job on the march was that of recording the exploits of his father-in-law, Gnaeus Julius Agricola (AD40-93), on the British campaign. They returned to Rome long before the snows took hold, leaving devastation behind.

Heartland of the Caledonian Forest—Aberdeenshire—was historically hit hardest. Unlike Westcoast Scotland, soil and climate here are receptive, rich and varied. The balmy Gulf Stream circles the Orkneys and Ultima Thule and then streams towards these ‘lowland’ hills, bringing balanced seasons to an already rich environment.

Climate, soil and people are more fertile/kindly than in rocky west coast ravines. Caledonian Scots pine, pinus sylvestris thrives. So does farming.

IMG_8075When the Romans burned their way north, they were looking for gold. They found rebellious tribes and left them for dead, along with their forests. Robert the Bruce, in the summers of 1308-1310, burned the hunting (pine) forests of his rival for the throne, Comyn Earl of Buchan, and left nothing behind.

Two world wars finished off what was left of minimal remaining Caledonian pine stands.

Now, centuries on, Scotland’s Forestry Commission helps smallholders and landowners to replant oases of indigenous forest—pine, birch, oak and hazel—with maintenance grants to keep them sheep-and-deer-free—not an easy task in what are now (2000 years later) rich agricultural rolling meadows.
Other private agencies—like Trees for Life Scotland—have initiated their own planting programs, restoring pine, birch and aspen in deer-free ‘exclosures’, to encourage regeneration of natural understorey. Pine marten, snowy owl, crossbill, goldfinch and crested tit have all returned to such reclaimed woodland.

Biomass—Use or Abuse of Alternative Fuel

Trinidad Pier in whaler days, now a Northern Humboldt fishing village and resort

Trinidad Pier in whaler days, now a Northern Humboldt fishing village and resort

Controversially, Humboldt State University—seen by many academic institutions as a forerunner of enlightened attitude to use of technology within the natural environment—has mistakenly taken up the cudgel of biomass—as a back-door entry into the thorny climate problem. Unfortunately, their research has not been completely transparent and investigation reveals ‘substantial’ funding from forestry interests which are not impartial to the outcome of the University’s plan.

Biomass, seen as waste from a single campfire, may be relatively harmless to our atmosphere. Big business biomass, however—the University declares it will run its whole energy program on biomass fuel, instead of conventional statewide power sources—comprises woodland waste: milling detritus, forest-floor leftovers, mixed in a suitably nice cocktail of machine oil, sawdust sweepings, with an occasional drop of diesel—to go.

Local Earth-First activist group Climate Crisis Humboldt spoke in forum last week with HSU Senate, suggesting they reconsider their plan, and deliberation is underway within the hallowed halls.

The Humboldt climate group’s cry has not gone unheard. They are supported by European and international interests, embodied in Friends of the Earth, who are pushing for cancellation from the (higher—U.S.) Senate!

There is hope—if the state’s most northern university changes, the rest of California’s campuses will follow their lead. There is already considerable antipathy in the county towards the underhanded way in which funding from a local forestry giant has been offered as bait.
After it was pointed out to them that more carbon is stored by older/larger trees, than by acres of smaller young saplings, the company’s tree-felling operations have been temporarily halted by popular demand.

Global Temperatures Already Rising

Now statistics for February 2016 already show a marked upward trend, with unprecedented temperatures in both hemispheres.

February 2016 global temperatures already reached top limit

February 2016 global temperatures already reached top limit

As March brings spring growth, the climate question will come up again and again. Earth Day—April 20th—celebrating John Muir‘s birthday and his “wilderness America”—is targeted by tree sitters, EarthFirsters and volunteer forest guardians in Pacific NorthWest, in their march for the trees.

Earth Mother is indeed listening to our cries this spring. And if we choose to mend our ways, she might even forgive us and bring back her beauty—or her Beast.

It’s our choice. Our future.

Four hours ago, a massive 6.6 magnitude Richter earthquake hit coastal Taiwan and Southern Japan. Local agencies, already overburdened with ongoing (nuclear) clean-up, continue to report. Minimal U.S. press coverage—slow to extract reports from the world arena in (western) night-time, unless specifically targeted—may find that differences in international dateline/time-zones may not result in this event’s being buried, It may not fit into a neat, orderly media-orchestrated political schedule.

There are ramifications, however—especially for western U.S.A.

Two groups of Native American elders have summoned their communities, in preparation for uprooting and a move inland, away from their traditional ocean-listening posts. In San Luis Obispo county, a small nucleus of Chumash, originally ‘whale-whisperer sea-shell people’from Morro Bay to Malibu—their traditional lodges and burial grounds long-since displaced by ex-pat. Ventura- and Topanga Canyon-ites—have returned to hear “repeated warnings from our cetacean siblings” that we are endangering our homeland.

The Quileute tribe of La Push, Washington holds a ritual each year, where every woman, man and child in the reservation summons local whales, dolphins, sharks, seals and other marine species to the community’s beach by playing drums. The tribe’s chief then wades among the animals and interprets their sounds.

In 2014, tribal leaders were “summoned” by Pacific Ocean whales, to alert them to a tsunami, ‘soon’ to engulf their community. La Push is located at the intersection of three tectonic plates, prone to earthquakes of nine-point magnitude. The tribe immediately started to make plans to move their community to higher ground. It applied for and received money from both the State of Washington and the federal government, to fund the relocation. Synchronously, assistance has been offered to Quileute elders by Finland’s University of Aalto, in designing their new settlement. In Finland’s Baltic and Arctic Oceans, they are also brother-whale-whisperers.

Wilderness no Longer Wild

John Muir—progenitor and founder of first U.S. National Park—would be proud of us, his descendants. Yet we seem oblivious of our continuing and unrelenting pollution of our only home.

Sudden floods in New England, the Carolinas-coastal Virginia cause concern over contaminated drinking water supply. Marinas in Coral Gables, Everglades and Gulf states, Alabama, Louisiana and eastern Texas are revamping water towers last used in Hurricane Katrina, to cope with extra demand. Meanwhile Four Corners, Gila Bend, Arizona, Utah, Nevada—don’t even think of temperatures in Death Valley—and in a geographical spread as far east as Idaho, Kansas and Minnesota, high winds bring risk of grass fires.

Half the country is burning up, while the other half flounders in rising sea levels.

Do we still deny we have a hand in this? Are we pretending we don’t know what’s going on?

Competing for Cleanliest
Last week California Governor Jerry Brown scoffed at Florida governor’s amorous advances for a tourism “exchange”. While organic Californians greatly outnumber Brooklyn retirees in the balmy Everglades and Fort Lauderdale, in ecological terms, neither state can boast a totally clean city.

Making the Unconscious Conscious

Inadvertent success story: Man departs San Miguel island, CA; original inhabitants move back in

Inadvertent success story: Man departs San Miguel island, CA; original inhabitants move back in

We have about a month left of Jupiter in Gemini, while the clash among the ‘social planets’—giants Uranus, Neptune and Saturn—continues. Some of us have learned over the course of a generous Jovian tenure—June 11th, 2012—June 25th, 2013—that Jupiter bestows the gift of perspective/awareness on those ready for it. It allows us to bring to the surface of our conscious mind previously unconscious models we’ve been using to give meaning to our lives.

It hasn’t been easy. Human nature—at least Culture’s left hemisphere part of the mind—abhors chaos, can’t handle not knowing what the next step is; needs the security of control. Things in the Universe have been out of control: solar flares—ongoing—freezing conditions in Europe—continuing—and, just for entertainment, an occasional asteroid fly-by within 3.6million mile radius. As for personal emotions…the mind and the heart…don’t ask. Jupiter’s influence, usually auspicious, has had its mercy strained! In addition, we should all be hugely grateful to exit the two-year grip of a celestial Grand Cross, see back commentary for June 2010-12.

And, as we like to think sidereally here, since April 25th’s full (Scorpio) moon/lunar eclipse, there has been a surfeit of ‘death’ and transformational issues. Scorpio, ruled by Pluto, is about stripping away artifice, what’s false, corrupted and diseased, so healing will begin. And since the penumbral eclipse focused mainly on the cetacean population of the southern oceans, the rest of humanity was abandoned to sort out its own chaotic-upside-down nowhere-to-turn-but-inward lives. That about cover it?

Making the Unconscious Conscious
Following two years of restriction, hemmed in like fish in a glass tank with a vision of a world beyond our reach, the astral grip is loosening. Generous Jupiter, thanks to its massive abundant visionary self, comes crashing headlong into communications master Gemini*—the Outside World—which has held the Sun and Mercury in thrall for ten days—with more to come.
Chart for New York, New York, USA May 31, 2013; 02:33:55a.m.

*Gemini, celestial twin personality: loves to see both sides, to argue black is white; hate is love in disguise; emotion is tweakable, and everybody has a mirror side, which Gemini likes to question and reveal. Gemini represents communication via media sources, frequently dual/false information, a hyper- or over-stimulated argumentative approach to resolution of difficulties, highlighted in negative focus on world crises. But it also works to enrage or incite us to action, based on our desire for fairness and individual freedom. And Jupiter, with grace, brings emotional answers to those ‘cultural’ problems.

In world—media—terms, external/societal/television attention focus on genetically modified organism [GMO] food marches in key cities across the nation over Memorial Day weekend, finally allowed the American Earthfirst movement to join the rest of the world in a groundswell towards honesty in human nutrition. The media aspect is pure Gemini. The undercurrent of wellbeing, sharing information on organically-grown alternatives to poisoned food are the workings of trustful Jupiter. Where world media ‘vampires’ rob us, by appealing to our egos, Jupiter injects faith in outcome: one-on-one kindness on a human scale, seeing both sides of the picture, empathizing with the ‘other’, meshing heart and mind; moving forward without controlling. A tall order, but the way ahead for our race, nonetheless.

Mercury, the winged messenger, ruler of Gemini, still holds supreme mental reins until he moves, along with Venus out of Gemini and into Cancer in early June.

With the present lineup (May 31st, 2013, EST) Sun, Mercury, Venus and Jupiter conjunct in Gemini, all loving, spiritual, mental and physical forces are holding together to pull us through this portal of Babel. With the Moon and Neptune standing together in watery Pisces, it is likely the world Oceans are playing a major part in the transition. It feels like the last bastion of social togetherness—human heart—VENUS-and-mind-MERCURY holding out against the freezing-hard-heartedness of Saturn standing proud in deathly Scorpio, along with an equally frozen Uranus-Pluto square.

You are Divinely Guided and Deeply Loved

The greatest truth is that you are divinely guided through thisgreat journey called life by a higher Presence and purpose. You are just going to feel more successful, experience more love, become more abundant, have deeper peace, and feel more joy, bliss and freedom than ever before. Your life and your future is only going to get better and better and better! Accept this by taking a deep breath and inhale this information into your heart right now. Focus on feeling this expansive positive heart-felt future the first thing when you wake up each morning. Explore this sensation as reverently as you would care for your first new born child. This life is about learning how to let go of control…and letting in more gentleness and love. Just imagine that you inherited a magical pot of gold that is always pouring infinite great riches into your life every day
Mehal Rockefeller, M.D. Ph.D.

Let’s say for a moment, that this is it. The old ways have vanished or no longer work on demand. We are midway through a transition held open as a welcoming doorway by a sentient universe encouraging us to become more conscious beings: to forgive ourselves our mistakes—not constantly go back over them—but move on into flowing, un-controlling loving interaction among equals. It may sound lovely and pie-in-the-sky, but all it takes is to remember to start each day envisioning the change in one’s own life. And the more friends we share a trial run with, the more fun it becomes.

Since this blog’s relocation from one (eastern) Ocean to another (western) shore, Ascension-consciousness has been forefront in conversation, on the internet, on people’s lips. Along with the concept of purity of water, its scarcity and preciousness, California has led the U.S. in growing uncontaminated/organic natural food, while pressing antediluvian legislation for honesty in labeling [non-GMO organic] food we eat:

Life is meant to be creative and full of joyful moments. If you don’t naturally make that happen for yourself, there are yoga-wellness and self-realization technique centers in abundance, particularly where the mighty state University of California’s subsidiary branches reach. The populace sways gently with the changing tide: the metaphor applies not only to the Ocean’s hold over pre-boom fishing communities, a logging industry ‘converted’ (by local pressure) to environmentalist practices; and increased tourism (which has fractured old communities before). Small successes include the San Miguel Island nature reserve, picture top, and active treesits halting work on huge arteries by transit companies, tree felling held at bay, in respect for the planet’s last remaining virgin redwood forests and migratory birds.*

Modoc prognostication

Jupiter, ever optimistic, will rejoin his night-sky companions at the end of June to stand for two years in watery home-family-loving Cancer. July then brings a great (watery) beneficial trine—especially for Scorpios, Cancerians and Pisceans. This summer flowering, ‘opening’, allowing-through of the subconscious into the our conscious being may be led by Nature, and those lucky individuals ruled by water. There certainly have been enough predictions: that our watery friends are ready to rescue us, to lead us from prosaic left-brain bottom-line value judgments—epitomized by Gemini—into a conscious embrace of friendship, gratitude and love for our fellow travelers.

‘There is a river flowing now very fast. It is so great and
swift that there are those who will be afraid. They will try to hold on
to the shore. They will feel they are being torn apart and will suffer
 greatly.
Know the river has its destination.
The elders say we must let
go of the shore, push off into the middle of the river, keep our eyes
open and our heads above the water.
And I say, look around and see who is in there with you and celebrate’
Hopi Elder Prophecy, Oraibi, Arizona 2000

It’s really up to us.

The Siderealview is that we have been standing at the gate since well before 2012; and the Universe, sentient, reflective of us but infinitely more loving, guiding, parental, offers us a bridge between our thoughts and feelings, waits patiently for us to wake up, to allow our subconscious to filter through into our processing mind: to let heart and brain communicate, interact.

‘Why are you so afraid of the world? Fear of the world is really fear of Love’

It is time to let down the barriers to love. It’s not too scary to talk intimately with another fellow being. We do it on the internet all the time. Now it’s time for real players on the real stage.

With Jupiter to give us trust in outcome, regardless of feisty Geminids, we can do it. It’s what we all came here for.

Entering TimeCollide—Adjust Frequency—the CHANI Material

April 28, 2013

From the perspective of the Ancients—ancestral knowledge of number, geometry and the stars—always had a place in (sacred) calculation—as it has on this page. And all sages worth their salt were versed in celestial appearances, signs in the heavens.

Trails of Fibonacci footprints at Stonehenge: ‘Julia Set’ cropcircle teatime July 1996

So when slowly, inexorably, over the last five seasons of increasingly complex crop circle appearances, messages have revealed themselves in the fields showing this ancient view, the revered, the sacred: some of us poor lost strays being led gently by the ‘new’ vision have allowed ourselves to leap beyond our normal belief-cultured response to see this as a possible ‘time wave moment‘, an idea model proposed by Terence McKenna before 1999, which explains the ‘interconnection of physical and psychological phenomena from the submolecular to the macrocosmic level’, D McKenna & T McKenna TimeWave Theory and The Invisible Landscape

Timewave Theory, was developed by Terence Mckenna as a replacement for science’s notion of time as a featureless and smooth surface. Timewave suggests that time is actually structured, has a topology, and can be likened to the stock market. Time is actually a series of risings and falling fluctuations of “novelty”—defined by the ethonobiologist as an ‘increase over time in the Universe’s interconnectedness, or organized complexity, or ‘novelty’. McKenna was convinced—like the ancients—that such moment or moments of time colliding with itself would be heralded by spectacular celestial events.

The Venus cycle, beloved of the Maya, is receiving attention—in astronomical and astrological circles—as the Great Cycle closes at this time.

So when a Jupiter-size planet gets drawn into the electromagnetic field of a “black hole” [space.com lingo], it is big news. Recent stargazing professionals are excited by spiral galaxy NGC 4845 in constellation Virgo, because it seems to be waking up and taking a bite out of a passing planet.

‘Combine harvester’ CC, darling of croppies, appeared 7 years ago at Wayland’s Smithy, Oxon

This could be the “cosmic shock wave” predicted for 2013, mentioned in CHANI. Made at Waylands Smithy in July 2006. Each long ray has a 7 x 8 grid of overlaid crop, meaning “56” in the Mayan Venus calendar which is when the crop picture appeared (56/65 Sun Venus conjunctions, each lasting 0.9 years). The Venus calendar would end in April 2013 with 65/65. CHANI predicts a shock wave sometime soon, maybe May 16-18, 2013 as drawn in crops at Cowdrove Hill on June 18, 2011

The CHANI Material
During the summers of 1994-1999 a group of international Echelon researchers working under an umbrella corporation known as ‘R.A.’, had access to a CERN-like collider in Africa where they ran their search programs, including e.g. Space-Time Fabricating, Simulation by Atom Replacement and Removal, Holographic Programming of Dark Matter, Manifestation of Quantum Energies and Associated String Programming with Ether/Etheric Interaction. Not unexpectedly, they encountered an ‘Entity’ which fell into conversation with the team members. Needless to say, fourteen years later, this material—acronym CHANI = Channelled Holographic Access Network Interface—is still considered ‘classified’.

While the team’s original remit was to gather information from all sources, their attention turned to the Entity when he explained his task was to study us [Earthlings]. Often during interchanges, the pupil was the more apt professor; making the NSA team act the ‘guinea pig’. One researcher described his five-year experience as “… a seminal interaction between science, theory and spiritual awareness.”

‘At first, the words and spellings that the Entity used may strike you as odd, silly and even childlike. But I assure you that even our top neurolinguists were awestruck by how this simple flow of words, structure, spelling and positioning spoke so directly to the reader’s being. It was instructive, guiding and informative, but most noteworthy was its pleasantly gentle and soothing manner on your ear, heart and mind. It was baby talk for adults. The simplicity and ease with which the Entity managed to explain and get difficult and controversial subjects across had a definite lingering quality. I experienced this on a number of occasions when some thoughts would linger for days, my subconscious actively contemplating the information somewhere in the back of my mind. I’m sure that all the researchers on CHANI shared this experience. It is my hope that you, the reader of this article, will have the same experiences when reading some quotes of the transcripts provided.’
Rubicon Revealer, CHANI project

Researchers asked the Entity over 20,000 questions and received answers to more than 95 per cent of what they asked.

‘Dark and Portal Matters’

Entity explained that contact was made because he was our equivalent of a ‘student’ and had authority from his Elders to interact with, observe, study and learn from us. The Entity explained that his Elders ‘noticed us and our whole solar system’ when we crossed into ‘their’ parallel universe. Entity also explained that we weren’t the only race reaching this crossroads/merge, and they were monitoring other alien races from other planets in our solar system as well. Entity was specifically tasked to study us (humans, Earth), while other students were tasked to study other races and planets corresponding to their planet and solar system. It was not just a merging or colliding of our Earth reality, but it was our complete solar system colliding with the reality of another ‘parallel’ solar system. As we humans (with some alien assistance/technology) had been ‘playing with dark and portal matters’, the result was that our whole solar system traversed into “their” universe of visibility/perception.

“Me say eat Eg because Eg good for u”
Because data was received and sent electronically, format of the Entity’s replies is characteristically brief, like a child’s, but team consensus was that its almost dreamlike lullaby-word quality had the effect of calming them and inspiring them to initiate more elaborate interchange. Their queries had unexpected results. For example, when asked about his version of the Universe, or his Elders’ ‘parallel timeline’, the Entity replied:

“God give u eg —
eg is there — eg already created — eg exist

u use frewil decide what do about eg

u can make choice boil eg eat eg

u can make choice bake eg eat eg

u can make choice u leve eg but eg get roten but eg stil there

u can not change what god created but with frewil u must decide what u do with time colide ok

“me try xplain this beter

The Entity referred to dolphins and mentioned their importance on a number of occasions. Dolphins somehow balance certain vibrations on Earth. Specifics were given, but that part was not cleared by Echelon for release. The Rubicon team was advised to keep an eye on dolphin behaviour and events involving dolphins. Their activity would herald events and Earth changes.

At the end of 2005, the CHANI project files were handed over to the Rubicon Station for ‘Project Reveal’. As the name suggests, Rubicon dealt with information deemed to have reached a point of no return. Rubicon division decided certain information should be released and seeds planted to measure and research public reaction—limited yet constant between 2006-2008—clearing the way and setting a foundation for whenever they chose to flood the wires with full disclosure.

TimeWave Zero: McKenna's cosmic shock predicted by crop circles? for May 2013

TimeWave Zero: McKenna’s cosmic shock predicted by crop circles? for May 2013

Rubicon had tried all other methods to make contact and failed. So the material was consigned to a dip in the public ocean, where limited feedback was deemed necessary. The information was (discreetly) released on select internet forums by a Rubicon Revealer.

While this blog maintains ‘disclosure-conspiracy’ theorists have a limited audience, recent sterling work/conference by media entrepreneur Suzanne Taylor kept the issues alive—bringing speakers Rupert Sheldrake, Marianne Williamson and Graham Hancock dumped by media mogul TED-x: she picked up the slack as a prelude to her good work in the coming crop circle season.

Did we say Crop Circles?
Speaking of which, what happened?

As we know, cold and wet are spring’s enemies, slowing the growth of early [crop-circle-potential] crops. Normally at this time at least one new design has appeared in Britain’s earliest overwintering crop—yellow oil seed rape/canola. But this season has been seriously affected: slow, inexorable winter crept into Britain in early November 2012; lingering wetly and drearily into January and February; early birds hoped for a little light relief when March was dry, but it turned out to be the second coldest on record [c.f. 1947; 1962 was colder].

Mean March temperature was 2.2ºC (36ºF)—more than 3ºC colder than long-term monthly average.
March 2013 matched the average temperature in March 1947; only March 1962 was colder at 1.9ºC (35ºF).
March was much drier than usual with 62.1mm (2.4in) of rain—65% of the historical average for the month.
[Scotland was yet more parched with only 35% of its normal downpours.
British Met Office

Not good news for growth. Even crop circles need the warm in which to manifest. And, unlike previous seasons, this year has not produced ‘alternative’ circles in Java or Mexico.

So, is it any wonder that the croppie mind turns to phantasm, to extra-dimensional talk? More than any other, this exercise in spring aberration—some would call madness—seems most fitting in a gap between appearances. After all, as this blog has oftentimes declared: human consciousness is all—we are jointly creating our own reality… So what was it that we needed to learn before the gods will bring back our toys to play with?

If CHANI refers to May this year—2013—there are fewer than fifteen days to go.

Personally, sidereally—after stumbling blindly—along with other like spirits through recent long drawn-out repeats of last year’s Saturnian grip, the SHIFT feels as if it might already have happened: that TimeWave Zero has been reached, that we are now in the Entity’s period of TimeCollide.

“Oil get very big sickness—no use after 15 may”
Now may not be the best time to reveal the Entity’s often-repeated bombshell, but when crop circles are teasingly absent, and European money markets are trying to pretend all is well; what do we have to lose? So, if for no other reason than that it gives us food for thought before the first elusive crop circle suddenly appears and puts us all out of our misery, here is CHANI’s most intriguing sequence:

Baroness Thatcher née Roberts (13 October 1925 – 8 April 2013) Prime Minister of Great Britain 1979-1990

Baroness Thatcher née Roberts (13 October 1925 – 8 April 2013) Prime Minister of Great Britain 1979-1990

“many things go wrong 15 may because door opens with portal to dark matters not undestanding earth beings

sharon will dimise be4 15 may

mandela will dimise be4 15 may

thatcher will stroke be4 15 may

japan warring thing will commenceing before 15 may
secretly
oil gets very big sicknes no use anymore after 15 may

old bush will very sick be4 15 may

cheney will dimise be4 15 june

obama accident before 27 aperil

big sicknes be4 15 may

very moving earth on 17 aperil
oceon not sleeping when heaven things beware many waters to come drown

brown cheat be4 15 may

putin missing after 15 may many worry people do crazy things”

Lady Thatcher did die earlier this month, and oil shale and sand deposits in Arctic waters have been plagued by an ‘unknown’ radioactive source (during fracking) which is threatening to ‘contaminate’ the US oil supply.

Croppies, on the other hand, will just be thankful if one tiny chink of a suggestion of a formation should hint at trying to push its way through the frozen earth of Wiltshire: some time in the next five days would be good.

Come to think of it, maybe the Wesak or Beltane spirits’/consciousness are at work. Seasons 2010, 2011 and 2012 were “late”. If so, surely on the stroke of May 1st, our long-awaited design may show its (unripe) face…

With a little help from our friends …

Rubber Duckies show the World the Way

February 17, 2012

Moby Duck on a Round-the-World ticket

MobyDuck on his world cruise: 28,800 plastic toys circling the globe

They’re turning up everywhere: surprising delighted beachcombers from the shores of the Outer Hebrides to the sands of Malibu. It’s the Rubber Ducky Armada, with the world as their bathtub.

In January 1992 a Hong Kong container ship caught in a cyclone tossed two rows of containers overboard. One broke open and released 28,800 plastic bath toys into the Pacific at a point where the 45th parallel meets the International Date Line 44.7°N, 178.1°E. A score years later, beachcombers are still picking up the four toy varieties on the Pacific rim: (not just) yellow duckies, (but also), green frogs, red beaver and blue turtles.

Bleached in transit: plastic duckies/frogs/turtles retrieved by the Seattle beachcomber project

About, about, in reel and rout
The death-fires danced at night;
The water, like a witch’s oils,
Burnt green, and blue, and white
Samuel T Coleridge
Rime of the Ancient Mariner

Twenty years on, these little critters are still appearing on beaches — and not just round the Pacific. They’re on the move: now they can be found stranded on the shore from the Hebrides in Scotland, to Hawaii, to Nantucket, to Sitka, Alaska, where a record number of 111 toys beached within the first decade. Scientists have in the meantime succeeding in mapping a working route through the world’s oceans by tracking the movement of the rest of these little floaters. Some have even been cut by Inuit fishermen out of the Arctic ice.

Through Arctic ice, duckies head south to meet the Gulf Stream in the Atlantic

Both Seattle oceanographer, Dr Curtis Ebbesmeyer, and world traveler and author Donovan Hohn are using their route as a cautionary tale. This ‘duck-current’ navigates the Bering Strait, Arctic ice and the Greenland Gap, falling into the north Atlantic where it drifts south (cold) past New York, scoops up tropical warm from the Bermuda Triangle and returns north as the Gulf Stream to the North of Scotland. Sound romantic? Perhaps, yet the cautionary tale told by these ocean biologists to alert the rest of us, sitting in our comfort zone, is that our wasteful habits are now so thoughtless that they potentially threaten all lifeforms — including our own.

“I took to heart something said by Beth Flint, a wildlife biologist I spoke to in Hawaii, who said, ‘Be careful. As striking as the images of plastics are, there are more invisible impacts that demand attention.'”

‘Plastics, I think, are useful in this measure because we can’t see greenhouse gases that are absorbed by the oceans, and you can’t see PCBs, DDT, or agricultural runoff. So, plastics act as a bellwether’ Donovan Hohn, author Moby Duck: 28,800 Bath Toys Lost at Sea, British release February 23rd

“I think it’s all about incongruity. These tiny Friendly Floatees are the epitome of childhood, an icon of bathtime. To think of them bobbing out there on the harsh, vast, wild ocean is funny; it seems like a joke.”

But it’s not.

Currents carry drifters around the Subpolar Gyre in 3years, around the Subtropical Gyre in 6years. Flotsam can circulate in the Garbage Patch for half a century

I have blogged before about the North Pacific Gyre (Feb.2010) and its astonishing ability to collect and entrap more plastic scum than plankton in its famous ‘Garbage Patch’. It is a deathground for any remaining wildlife foolhardy enough to enter it. It’s the size of Texas. And growing.

‘I don’t think we’ll ever find all the toys,” says Dr Curtis Ebbermeyer, whose enthusiastic beachcombing enterprise specializes in the Pacific Northwest. ‘But we’ve discovered invaluable information about the nature of the (N.Pacific) Gyre.’ He described finding three (Spanish) glass fishing floats, c.1960, which had done eight circuits. In a 1950s experiment Canadian oceanographers threw 33,869 message-in-bottles (MIBs) in 12-oz brown glass beer bottles into the Gulf of Alaska.

Some of those have done the circuit three times.

Albatross as Bellwether or Omen

PNW oceanographer Ebbesmeyer says: “So far we’re aware of about 3%. The story pleases and fascinates people, but what it shows is something terrible — awful.”

British adventurer and explorer David de Rothschild focused attention on the proliferation of plastic in the vortex of the Gyre by sailing his 60-ft plastic catamaran, Plastiki, made from 12,500 recycled plastic bottles, through the Garbage Patch between San Francisco and Sydney in summer 2010.

Hohn has also travelled the world’s oceans — by steamer, container ship, icebreaker and ferry — to follow the routes taken by the duckies. What he found was something less than a fairy story.

“Most worrying are the increased levels of plastic compared with plankton in the ocean. It enters the sea via waterways all over the world. Fishing gear, plastic bags come down rivers and streams. It gets eaten by sea birds, fish and whales. Nothing can digest it.”

Over time it breaks down into particles that spread through the water column like liquid dust that travels all round the world. Scientists have issued recent warnings that the oceans’ ‘plastic level’ has significantly increased.

Trapped in Arctic ice, toys are then released to continue their journey when the ice melts

“Plastic is landing on our shores by the ton. There is measurable impact on marine mammals that get entangled, as well as sea turtles and birds that eat the stuff. Once this poison reaches the food chain it is a worry for human beings. We are putting plastic on the dinner plates of our grandchildren.” Donovan Hohn, author/researcher, February 2012

Combined with the Seattle beachcomber finds and the Canadian MIB results, scientists now have a new working model of earth’s ocean currents. They see submarine storms not as rivers; more as ocean-weather. The forecast’s not looking good.

‘There is no doubt that plastic is creeping into the food chain. That is a definite reality. We’ve got to get past this “out-of-sight out-of-mind” mentality.’

‘That’s what the ducks teach us.’ Curtis Ebbesmeyer

“It’s a story that’s wonderful-awful,” he says. “Trash travels all round the planet through the ocean; we know that. People think they throw stuff away. There is no away. It’s all in the ocean.”

The very deep did rot: O God!
That ever this should be!
Yea, slimy things did crawl with legs
Upon the slimy sea.
Coleridge, Rime of the Ancient Mariner

We're all in the same bathtub...

Part of me feels I should apologize for the ferocity of this article: compared with my usual Siderealview, where the material is often immanent, this one also has urgency. I am aware, too, that I am laying this story at the door of the already enlightened: the huge majority who shop/drop plastic bags are unlikely to bend an ear to this blog. But occasionally it doesn’t hurt to press a point.

Some of us live in the expectation that our next car will be rechargeable; our next vegetable seed purchase or market stall fruit will NOT be pesticide-sprayed or triple-plastic wrapped; our electricity bill used to help upgrade the supplier’s power source to solar/windpower. But we also live in the reality that few of our friends live ‘off-the-grid’, except in rare locations.

Some of us have even taken the proactive route in questioning suppliers on their integrity.*

Ancient Mariner's shipmates made him wear the dead albatross round his neck in penance for their change of fortune

Or we might, as Coleridge felt when he wrote his supernatural Rime of the Ancient Mariner, 1796, see the sharp decline in numbers of albatross as our fault. We might, like the old man, feel we should hang our heads in shame, wear a virtual albatross around our necks until the curse is lifted. After all, it’s not our fault big business is so careless about what it dumps at sea.

But, just as Coleridge’s audience believed that to wear the carcasse of the dead bird was justified for his killing the omen of good fortune, that Regency/Victorian patriarchal view still lingers in our attitude to pollution: so long as we do a minimum recycle, somebody else will pay the price for world pollution.

After all, what can a single person do? Is it realistic to expect the combustion engine to become a dinosaur overnight?

Eco-warrior, sailor and philanthropist, David de Rothschild navigated 'Plastiki' via Heyerdahl's 'Kontiki' route through the Pacific plastic Trash Vortex, in 2010

“What I hope that the Plastiki does and what we stand for is not about vilifying people, pointing fingers or just articulating problems. We are about challenging that thinking.” David de Rothschild, eco-explorer Plastiki crew-member

In all honesty, bar another Pacific meltdown, how many of us will stop using plastic tomorrow? How many of us will refuse to shop in supermarkets until they stop plastic proliferation?

But how else shall we bring about a change in what is already an urgent situation?

Remarkably there are some brave souls out there. de Rothschild is presently putting his not inconsiderable fortune and Plastiki weight behind a British initiative to have plastic bags banned in British supermarkets.

Since Devon residents of Modbury voted in 2007 to make their town plastic-free, fifty more towns and villages in Britain have joined the anti-plastic bandwagon.

Ocean Defenders campaign, with Greenpeace, created this graphic display on a NPacific Gyre island, words in golfballs

It is sometimes difficult for our American bros/sisters to comprehend how, for a small island (Britain in total: England, Wales, Scotland and N.Ireland together equal the approximate area of Oregon), British bureaucracy moves so slowly. The familiar US supermarket checkout adage ‘paper or plastic?’ has no meaning in the British Isles because supermarkets here never conceived that alternative checkout wraps such as recyclable paper from sustainable forests might actually give them a better image. One chain* actually pursued outdated reasoning that their “customers didn’t want that” (paper alternative). Unlike progressive states such as New Mexico, Massachusetts, Arizona, Oregon and California, Britain has almost no awareness of the multiple friendly uses of cotton, corn, rafia and hemp. ‘Alternatives’ offered for sale as ‘recyclable’ shopping bags by some chains have plastic constituents.

Eurozone parliamentary intiatives are underway to ‘reduce’ plastic consumption (sic) by 2025 or 2030. But by then, at the rate Time is speeding up, it may be too late. It may already be too late for the albatross, the blue whale, the dolphin and the Green Turtle.

Regardless of age, intellect or flexibility, we are all still capable of change: one day at a time: one small effort here, another baby step there; following our higher intent, our spiritual instinct, it is possible for us to turn this one around.

Vesica Piscis: Mother Earth and the Creative Force

August 7, 2011

Waylands Smithy Vesica Piscis crop circle, August 4th, 2011 -- sacred geometric co-radial circles where circumference of each shares the center of the other -- its central axis symbolizing the Cosmic Birth Canal to which, according to the Maya, all life returns in December 2012

The symbol of an ovoid –an egg– expresses the the primordial form of everything manifest, from atom to globe, from man to angel. The spheroid is with all nations the emblem of eternity and infinity —- a serpent swallowing its own tail. To realize the meaning, however, the sphere must be thought of as seen from its centre
Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, The Secret Doctrine

The Vesica Piscis in sacred tradition — from Kabbalist to Vedic to Zen — is considered to represent the female organ of creation. Its circular shape invokes an intertwining of feminine energies, Mother Earth’s womb, a mingling of Nature and primeval cultural reverence: it is a symbol seen in all ancient graphical traditions, from pagan Sun Wheel, Celtic cross, architectural ‘golden mean‘ to sacred windows in cathedrals, mosques, tabernacles and pagodas.

The Vesica Piscis also represented to the Maya the summer and winter solstices in any time cycle. To them the Vesica Piscis shape held the Cycle of the Ages — the Precession of the Equinoxes, less of a calculation of Time; more as a symbol of evolution of consciousness. We are experiencing this change now as we move from one World Age (Christian Age of Pisces, 0BC-AD2000) to another (‘New Age’ of Aquarius).

Its Latin meaning, lit. bladder of the fish, may seem to lessen its sacred quality to the prosaic, but it remains connected in a bodily way and in the geometric sense in all cultures — East and West.

Antediluvian Meaning
In earliest traditions, the supreme being was represented by a sphere, the symbol of a Creator with no beginning and no end, continually existing, perfectly formed and profoundly symmetrical. The addition of a second sphere represented the expansion of unity into the duality of female and male. By overlapping, both spheres — goddess and god — created a divine offspring. The Vesica Piscis with its derivatives, the Flower of Life, Tree of Life, and fundamentals of geometry, has a history of thousands of years, easily predating all major religions of the current era.

A theme running through several recent crop circle seasons — most striking from 2007 on — has been the suggestion by the ‘Circlemakers’ that we return to the wisdom of our roots: roots in our native Earth, roots of our tradition, our sacred beginnings. Since it is presently clear to almost anyone in the Western World that in pursuing our headlong drive for power, riches and exploitation over balance, human warmth and respect for the earth, we have gone seriously awry. It might seem that our combined consciousness — that deep level of awareness we share beneath the cultural façade; what Terence McKenna called Humanity’s Oversoul — has chosen to ‘wake us up’ by bringing us (those genuine electromagnetically-produced) crop circles each year, to educate us and lead us gently towards a more loving future.

Perhaps, therefore, we should not be surprised by the ingenuity and wry sense of humor of the Circlemakers.

For instance, this year in May — while we were all looking forward rather than looking at the miracles of the season — a quiet little ring appeared in green barley at East Kennet. It lay within one field’s breadth (roughly 10 acres) of one of Wiltshire’s most ancient shrines — the Neolithic tomb (long barrow) of West Kennet. Several 5,000-year old monuments lie — inter-visible — in this densely-built Neolithic landscape within two miles of Avebury’s Great Stone Circles.

Stonehenge and its magical meridian (51ºN) aside, the modern British are not particularly drawn to ancient shrines for their sacred quality, but crop circles — appearing within the same landscape and overlying the same limestone aquifer that produces measurable electromagnetic resonance (likened to human meditational alpha waves) — have been drawing them in. Nobody who has spent time in a pristine formation can deny it holds an ‘atmosphere’, an energy which can be uplifting, almost surreal. There is a growing body of evidence that crop circles are indeed produced through the medium of light and sound.

When the East Kennet circle first appeared, Stuart Dike, one of the long-time stalwarts of CropCircleConnector, crop circle ‘bible’, said at the time:

East Kennet crop design, May 17th, was ringed by extra circles June 22. If seen as the 'negative', it acquired a mirror-image 'positive' at West Kennet, July 25th 2011,

It certainly takes me back to over twenty years ago, from the 1990 days in Wiltshire. This is what we were all used to seeing back then, very simple designs, with a sense of excitement of what they could become. It’s a great indication that the earlier designs are very much part of what’s occurring today: the precursor of what was to be an evolutionary road in geometry and complexity. Perhaps the phenomenon is telling us not to ignore the purity of what was occurring at the very beginning.

Little did we know that the Circlemakers had further plans for that small field. One month later, during excitement of solstice and a profusion of appearances (2 at Stonehenge + 4 more in the vicinity over a 2-day period), nobody seemed to notice that East Kennet had acquired three concentric rings (June 22).

Then exactly a month after that, on July 22, attention focused on the intricate and superb ‘spider-web’ headdress formation which appeared in an adjoining field (East Kennet-2). There followed in quick succession two exceptionally graphic ‘suggestive’ crop designs at Roundway (1 & 2, July 23 & 25) –appearing to advocate humanity’s opening its third eye, releasing the body’s natural happiness hormone, melatonin— so, once again a little mirror appearance the same day — at West Kennet Long Barrow itself this time, next to the passage grave — seemed less than significant.

Working behind the scenes are a multitude of local altruistic researchers (CCC, above, is one of many). Their common bond is that they believe that ‘genuine’ crop circles are phenomena somehow produced through an electromagnetic or dimensional medium, either by light, sound or other variants within that vast spectrum. Sometimes, when local conditions are just right, a substance colloquially known as ‘angel hair’ (documented as being found after UFO sightings) has been deposited and can be measured, if collected within the first few hours after a formation has been laid down. Researchers in this field include the Massachusetts-based BLT, the British Harmony Blue group, and the CircularSite in the Netherlands,. They are consequently disappointed and nonplussed by world media efforts to persevere in ‘replicating’ crop circles, as has been tried on several occasions. Research on the dimensional/spiritual nature of real crop circles continues. On the morning the West Kennet circle motif appeared, the HarmonyBlue team found angel hair in the West Kennet formation (‘spiderweb’ photo, above).

There is even the suggestion — by the much more charismatic ‘spider-web’ crop appearance at East Kennet on July 22 — that the Circlemakers were telling them where to look!

Sacred geometry

The Vesica Piscis is the root principle in sacred geometry, interlocking circles which share radii, cosmically and intrinsically entwined. In precise mathematical measurement, where the circumference of each shares the center of the other, the ratio between the width of the vesica piscis to its height is the square root of 3, or approximately 1.7320508…

A mathematical sub-note: if straight lines are drawn between the centers of both circles with each other and with the two points where their circumferences intersect, two equilateral triangles can be formed, joining along an edge.

Archimedes of Syracuse, 287-212BC, Greek mathematician, physicist, engineer, inventor and astronomer, in his On the Measurement of the Circle, used these ratios:

In Christian tradition this sacred number –153– appears miraculously in the Gospel of John [21:11] as the number of fishes which Jesus of Nazareth caused to be manifested in the Feeding of the Multitude story. Since all Judaic written (Biblical) tradition centered on sacred number, numerological sequence and coded word combinations/number of letters used, this coincidence has a deeper meaning. The Fish — Lat. Piscis — is well-known as the secret symbol used by the Early Christians in Rome. By enumerating the total catch on the Sea of Gallilee, specific use of that sacred geometric ratio would have had meaning to early followers, aware of the significance of number.

Interlocking circles, Water & the Sacred Feminine: Vesica Piscis's sacred shape which seals the cover of the Sacred Chalice Well at Glastonbury, Somerset

Probably the best known example in England of the Vesica Piscis is the design on the wellcover of the Sacred Chalice Well at Glastonbury. While we are now culturally ignorant of number, this design resonates with us on a subliminal level (internal balance) and, seen there in a New Age context, represents the Universal symbol of the Feminine, Mother Earth, in contrast with the nearby masculine emblem of Glastonbury Tor. The Glastonbury example on the lid of the Chalice well — like the crop circle at Wayland’s Smithy (top) — contains the meridian line that runs through the centers of both circles.

Even though this archaic symbolism may not seem relevant to some after so many aeons of time, it is not unrealistic to suppose that our cultural unconscious, even blurred and insensitized by modern inconsequential minutiae in massive overdose, does at some deep level sense peace, harmony and beauty when we behold this sacred design.

Egyptian Celestial and Sacred Measure

We owe the Egyptians for the application of Sacred Geometry on the surface of the Earth.

Geo-metry means ‘measure of the earth’. In ancient Egypt, from which Greece and eventually the West inherited the study, the Nile would flood its banks each year, obliterating orderly demarcation of plot and farm areas. This annual inundation symbolized to the Egyptian the cyclic return of primal watery chaos, and when the waters receded the work began of redefining and re-establishing boundaries. The temple astronomer might announce that celestial configurations had changed so the orientation or location of a temple had to be adjusted. It was seen as regaining law and order, dominion over the earth. The laying of squares upon the earth had, for the Egyptian, a metaphysical as well as a physical and social dimension. This activity of measuring the earth – ‘geo-meter’- became the basis for a science of natural law embodied in the archetypal forms of circle, triangle and square.

Plato at his Academia required the study of mathematics as a prerequisite for philosophia, a term signifying “the love of wisdom” and “to lift the soul to truth.” To him, symbolic mathematics provided a map of our own inner psychological and sacred spiritual structure. Through the study of recurring harmonious patterns inherent in mathematics, music, and nature, ancient mathematical philosophers recognized that consistent correspondences occur inside the human mind and simultaneously throughout the universe.

Sacred geometric shapes: circle, triangle, square

This Zen calligraphic drawing shows Creation through the simple progression from the unity of the circle, through the triangle, to the manifest form of the square.

The circle –one– and the vesica piscis –two– were considered by ancient mathematical philosophers to be the parents of Number. Their firstborn, the triangle –three– was the ‘first’ and eldest number. Its geometric expression, the equilateral triangle, is the initial shape to emerge through the portal of the vesica piscis, the First of the Many. The square –four– was the second born.

Alpha and Omega
Mathematics and sacred geometry can take us beyond our ordinary limits to cosmic depths.

Furze or Morgan Hill, Bishops Cannings, August 6th dimensional progression on the Vesica Piscis: two cosmic parents produce a dimensional child

Man –from the Sanskrit root manas, meaning ‘Mind’, Consciousness, is a creature who can reflect upon himself. Man is not a mere constituent part –a cog– in this Universal Cycle, but he is both the final complete product of evolution and the original seed potential out of which the Universe germinated. The Alpha as well as the Omega. Both the seed and the tree: the tree of the universe is the actualization of the seed potential, which is Cosmic Man.

The World Tree of the Maya now begins to make sense. Mayan cosmology saw the Rift in the Milky Way as the the female birth canal (Yoni, Vesica Piscis) to which the Serpent of Life returns in December 2012.

Spiraling towards Source

CCC denizen Dike may have had a premonition when he said (above) that ‘the (CC) phenomenon is telling us not to ignore the purity of what was occurring at the very beginning’. Without realizing it, he may have been referring to the very beginning of Time. As we spiral onwards through the Galaxy towards our 2012 rendezvous with that primeval birth canal, we are indeed completing a cycle, coming to our ending, but also returning to our beginning.
